About Steve

Steve taught art locally from the mid 60’s until the late 90’s and part-time in the Ceramics Department at Colchester School of Art from 67 to 73. At college it was only in his final year that his interest in ceramics was kindled when Bernard Rook joined the Art Department. His free and dynamic approach to clay work opened the door to new and exciting means of expression and wooed him away from his easel. He is indebted also to Morgan and Angela Colleen, both consummate studio potters, that he was privileged to work with, but mostly to Mike Fyfield whose patient tutoring , humour and huge enthusiasm for potting and life were such an inspiration for him. As a teacher Steve describes himself as a ‘Jack of all Trades’ having to be versatile in a great range of disciplines. However, it was ceramics that proved to be the great bridge between tutor and student whether they were an adult or child. Paintings and pots were usually private commissions but paintings and drawings were also sold, through Trinity Galleries, the Dedham Art Centre and annual exhibitions of local artists. Steve grew up in Brightlingsea and the environment of marshes, creeks and boats that have always been and will continue to be an inspiration. With a new studio built he hopes that his ninth decade will enable him to immerse himself in new projects through the stimulation of Mersea Art Collective.
